Soroca Fortress – the most unusual castle in Moldova
Historically Moldova lies at the crossroads of major trading routs and today’s visitors can discover many old fortifications dating back to ancient times.
Soroca Fortress built in the Middle Ages at the Nistru river bend was part of a huge Moldovan defensive system. Initially wooden ,the fortress was built of stone between 1543-1546 according to the “Golden section” supreme law of harmony that made it unique among the examples of European military architecture. It has a perfect round shape with a diameter of 37,5 m and with 5 equidistant bastions.
There are some other interesting sights to see in Soroca town and near-by:
“The Candle of Gratitude” monument of 35 m height was erected on the cliff over the Nistru river. This monument is a tribute of great respect to unknown heroes having kept through the ages the history, culture and language of the People of Moldova.
The stone hermitage located in the Bechir canyons, that dates from the IX century. “The hill of gypsies” – the gypsy quarter with its eccentric houses.
The ethnography museum of Soroca region, the church (XIX century) of eclectic architecture and the beautiful “ The Assumption of the Virgin Mary “ church(1842).
Only 7 km to the North of Soroca Fortress, in the deep gorge the medieval monastery is located. It was restored during last years by the craftsmen – masons who live hereabouts, in a famous village of masons .
